Troop 1140/Venture Crew C&O Canal Bike Trip

Overview

  • The Troop and Venture Crew plan a 4-6 day trek on the C&O Canal, August 7-12, 2011

Trip Details and Requirements

  • The trip is expected to take 6 days (to include a down-day of river-tubing and sight-seeing)

  • Riders will carry a day pack with bike repair gear and other daily essentials

  • Tents, food, cooking and camping gear will be hauled by car from campsite to campsite

Leadership

  • Youth leadership is essential
  • Brian W. and Will B. volunteered as potential youth leaders
  • Potential Venturers will also be contacted to verify interest and to learn what recognitions are available for Venturers for this high adventure
  • We need adult volunteers to:
    • Handle collection and maintenance of permission and medical forms (everyone needs a physical examination prior to departure);
    • Organize drivers to haul camping gear daily;
    • Obtain permits
    • Collect and account for money
    • Determine eligibility for, and track crew fulfillment of requirements for
      • 50 Miler Award (Venturers and Boy Scouts)
      • Historic Trails Award (Venturers and Boy Scouts>
      • C&O Canal patch
    • Serve as the Cycling Merit Badge counselor or co-counselor

Cycling Merit Badge

  • Boy Scouts interested in earning the Cycling Merit Badge should be able to fulfill most, if not all, of the requirements for this MB, including mapping and taking a 50-mile ride in one day
